How to Potty Train Your Puppy Successfully.

Updated: Apr 11, 2023

Puppy training, including obedience training for puppies, is essential when you bring home a new puppy. One of the initial tasks you'll have to undertake is potty training. Training your new puppy to use the potty is a crucial step that requires a lot of patience and consistency.

How long it takes?

Although there is no definite answer as to how long it takes to potty train a puppy, the duration largely depends on the method of training you choose. The good news is that if you follow a consistent routine, it should take only a couple of weeks before your puppy is house trained to a large extent. However, it's essential to be realistic that there might still be accidents in the first few months, even if your puppy has a good understanding of potty training.

Two Tips for Potty Training Your Puppy

To speed up the house training process, you should prioritize consistency and prevention.

To ensure your dog learns to relieve itself outside at the earliest, it is essential to train them to do so.

Supervise Them For The First Week or Two

During the initial week or two, it is recommended to have someone around to supervise and take them out frequently as puppies cannot hold their bladders for long. The key to successful training is to focus on positive reinforcement rather than punishment. Praising the dog when they go outside will encourage them to repeat the behavior. By having someone around to let them out frequently during the first week or two, the dog can quickly learn that going potty outside is the correct behavior. It is important to start training your dog right away.

Although it may seem like a simple task, consistently praising your dog every time they relieve themselves outside is key to successful potty training.

Don't Punish them when they have accident indoor.

Using punishment as a means of correcting indoor accidents is not recommended, as your dog may not understand what they did wrong. If you catch your dog in the act of relieving themselves indoors, it is best to redirect them outside and praise them heavily once they finish their business.

Maintain a Consistent Schedule

To make potty training easier for your puppy, it is important to maintain a consistent schedule. This will not only help your furry friend understand what is expected of them, but it will also enable you to identify the times when they need to go outside for a potty break.

You can let your dog outside for a potty break:

  • in the morning when they wake up,

  • after they have eaten,

  • after a walk or play session,

  • after they have woken up from a nap,

  • before bedtime,

  • and other times.

It is advisable to monitor your pup for the first few days to determine how many times they need to go to the bathroom and what signs they exhibit when they need to go outside, such as sniffing, barking, or circling.

To encourage your dog to consistently pee or poop outside, it is crucial to shower them with praise each time they do so. Even though your neighbors may perceive you as crazy, you need to express how good your dog is and engage in a quick play session to demonstrate your happiness. This will help your dog understand that going potty outside is a positive experience.

Additionally, it is important to clean any indoor accidents effectively with an enzymatic pet odor cleaner to prevent your dog from eliminating in the same spot repeatedly. If the odor remains, your dog may perceive it as a suitable bathroom area.

It is crucial to keep in mind that accidents are bound to occur, particularly during the initial few weeks, and they are a natural part of the process of housebreaking. Do not lose hope, and continue with the toilet training process. Your puppy will soon be trained to do their business outside. It is essential to understand that patience and persistence are key in this process.
